Pressure Equipment Examinations

PSSR inspections & Testing - Northern Ireland

In the UK, The Pressure Systems Safety Regulations (PSSR) and in the Republic of Ireland, The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) (Amendment) Regulations 2012 (S.I. No. 445 of 2012) requires that pressure equipment undergo a pressure equipment examination (sometimes referred to as pressure testing) in accordance with a written scheme of examination. (Examination scheme not a requirement in ROI).

The regulations cover plant containing a ‘relevant fluid’, which is defined in the regulations as:

  • A gas > 0.5 bar

  • Steam at any pressure

  • Liquids under certain conditions

Equipment Covered By PSSR

The range of equipment covered by PSSR is wide and includes compressed air systems, pressurisation vessels refrigeration plants, heating systems and many others. Pressure equipment not containing a ‘relevant fluid’ will still be subject to certain regulations, namely The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) in the UK and General Applications Regulations No.SI 299 in ROI, both recommend this type of plant and typically hot water heating boilers are also inspected.

What We Offer

Based in Newtownabbey, Carn Engineering offer pressure equipment examinations (sometimes referred to as pressure testing) throughout Northern Ireland. we will complete an out-of-service examination (with the system being shut down and vessels opened up) and an in-service examination of the system running and under pressure. We will also complete and provide the mandatory PSSR Written Scheme of Examination (WSE), which in the UK must be drawn up by a competent person. The WSE includes a list of the protective devices; every pressure vessel and every pipeline in which a

defect may give rise to danger and those parts of the pipework which a defect might give rise to danger. Furthermore, the WSE will specify the nature and frequency of examination along with the measures needed to prepare the system for examination.
